Chennai public libraries battling for survival

More than 140 public libraries in Chennai are battling for survival. However, none of the political parties has promised to revive these knowledge centres in accordance with the modern standards.

Many book lovers and librarians want e-books and internet facility in all the libraries for the benefit of poor people.

Many librarians complained that out of 140 librarian positions in the city, more than 100 are yet to be filled. TN Library Association general secretary M Muthuswami said the post of director of public libraries department has been lying vacant for several years now. According to rules, the directorate of public libraries should establish local library authorities. The Chennai Local Library Authority has been non-functional for many years.

The Applicants will be required to submit the following:

1. Brief Abstract of the proposal in 1500 words.

2. Composition of the Research Team including Director/Co-Directors, Departments and/ or Collaborating Institutions. 

3. CV of all lead researchers, and Institutional profile of institutions through which funding will be sought. 

Candidates will need to provide profile/certificate to show that the institution through which the project is routed. All application forms must be submitted in hard copy and soft copy (E-mail:rpicssr@gmail.com) alongwith two copies of abstract, duly forwarded as per the prescribed format to:

BLIS admission in Calcutta University 2016-17

ADMISSION NOTICE

Bachelor of Library & Information Science (BLIS) Course, 2016 – 2017

Duly filled in application in the prescribed form (available on the University website along with Prospectus) for Admission Test for admission to the BLIS Course (Evening) (2016 – 2017) accompanied by the receipt of a challan (obtainable from the Cash Counter of the University at the College Street campus) of Rs.250/- (for General and OBC Candidates) and Rs. 125/- (for SC/ST/PH candidates) should be submitted to the office of the Department of Library & Information Science, Asutosh Building (Top floor) 87/1 College Street, Kolkata - 700073 on all working days (12 Noon to 2 PM) till 31. 05. 2016. The challan should necessarily be endorsed by the Office of the Department before deposition of fees at Cash Counter of the University. An Entrance Examination will be held on 05. 06. 2016 (Sunday) at Asutosh Building for which the candidates must report along with their Admit Cards.

Total Intake: 58. Admission will be made on the basis of the merit list prepared through Admission Test, with reservations as per norms of the University of Calcutta for SC, ST, OBC, PH etc.

Eligibility: A Bachelor Degree with Honours (10 + 2+ 3) or Master Degree or a Degree in a technical subject (of the pattern 10 + 2 + 4 or 10 + 2 + 5) such as Medical Science, Engineering, Law etc. of this University or having an equivalent degree of any other University or Institute recognized by this university will be eligible for admission to the BLIS course. Persons appearing in the final Part of Honours Examination will be allowed to sit for the Admission Test. But their admission to BLIS will be subject to the condition of securing Honours Degree when the result comes out and also according to the merit list of BLIS Admission Test.
